Completed in early 1998, Cambridge Cohousing is one of the first Cohousing communities to be developed in the Boston area. Advocacy of Green Building practices was an original focal value of residents, guiding even the choice of site near public transportation.
The project, recognized by the Department of Energy’s Building America program, utilizes an innovative geothermal heat pump system for most heat and hot water needs, reducing conventional energy costs by more than half. Forty-one units, with shared community spaces, were constructed using prefabricated sections, providing advantages of efficient use of materials, speed of erection, and greater acoustical isolation between units.
